Paint Cans (Empty)

What Should I Do With It?

Metal paint cans, commonly used for home improvement and DIY projects, are highly recyclable in standard metal recycling streams if they are prepared properly. Before recycling, ensure the can is completely empty and the remaining paint residue has dried solid, then place both the can and the detached lid in the recycling bin. Leaving the lid off is a critical step because it allows sanitation workers to easily verify that the container is empty, dry, and safe to process. If you still have usable leftover paint, store it for future maintenance instead of discarding it, as a tightly sealed opened can remains usable for up to two years, while an unopened can of latex, acrylic, or oil paint can last for over a decade.

💡 Helpful Tip

Before throwing this away, see if it can be fixed up, given to a friend, or donated to a local thrift shop. Keeping items in use is the best way to stop waste before it starts!
