Paper Cups

What Should I Do With It?

Paper cups cannot be recycled or composted as standard paper because they feature an internal plastic or wax lining designed to prevent leaking. This synthetic barrier does not break down in compost bins, leaving toxic residues in the soil, and cannot be separated at standard paper mills. While the paper cup itself belongs in the trash, the outer cardboard sleeve is fully recyclable and should be sorted with your regular paper items. Disposal of the plastic lids and straws depends entirely on your regional waste program, so check local acceptance criteria for small rigid plastics before sorting them.

💡 Helpful Tip

Before throwing this away, see if it can be fixed up, given to a friend, or donated to a local thrift shop. Keeping items in use is the best way to stop waste before it starts!
