Paper Take-Out Boxes
What Should I Do With It?
Kraft paper take-out containers are common at many restaurants and grocers, but their natural brown appearance is highly misleading when it comes to disposal. Despite looking like recyclable paper, these containers are not accepted in most curbside recycling programs. As they are designed for food, they are frequently contaminated with embedded grease and oils. More importantly, the interior plastic lining used to prevent leaks cannot be easily separated during processing, as the plastic film is fused directly to the paper fibers. Some coatings may also release unsafe toxins when heated during the industrial recycling process. To minimize waste entirely, consider bringing your own reusable containers for take-out.
Before throwing this away, see if it can be fixed up, given to a friend, or donated to a local thrift shop. Keeping items in use is the best way to stop waste before it starts!
