Silica Packets

Household ✅ Standard Recycling
Small paper packets of clear silica gel beads.

What Should I Do With It?

Silica packets are widely used as a desiccant, or drying agent, to protect electronic devices, leather goods, and dry foods from absorbing moisture. Made of silicon dioxide, a highly porous substance closely related to quartz sand, silica can absorb about forty percent of its weight in water. Although the gel itself is chemically inert and non-toxic, the small packets pose a significant choking hazard for pets and children, and consuming the granules in large quantities can be dangerous. To discard them safely, tear the packets open and empty the silica directly into your household trash before throwing away the paper packet. Alternatively, you can save intact packets to keep toolboxes, storage bins, vehicle dashboards, or water-damaged electronics completely dry.

💡 Helpful Tip

Before throwing this away, see if it can be fixed up, given to a friend, or donated to a local thrift shop. Keeping items in use is the best way to stop waste before it starts!
