Takeout Container (Wax or Plastic-Lined Paperboard)
What Should I Do With It?
Takeout containers made from paperboard are typically lined with a thin layer of wax or plastic to prevent leaks. Since this protective lining cannot be separated from the paper fibers, these containers are not recyclable and must be thrown in the regular garbage. If your paperboard container has no glossy or waxy coating, you can scrape out any leftover food and recycle it with standard cardboard. However, you should always discard any cardboard boxes that are wet, greasy, or heavily soiled with food residue.
Before throwing this away, see if it can be fixed up, given to a friend, or donated to a local thrift shop. Keeping items in use is the best way to stop waste before it starts!
The recycling guidelines shown here are for general reference and educational purposes. Every city and town has different rules, sorting equipment, and recycling programs.
Please check your local town website or ask your local garbage collection program to make sure you are following your neighborhood's rules.
